<<reversemytrailer for mobile devices is a modified version of the driving simulator program originally created for Windows desktop. All of the main features of the simulator are available in the mobile version, with user controls adapted for operation on the touch-sensitive screens of mobile devices.
Forward and reverse speed is controlled by swiping a finger up and down either of two panels located on the left and right-hand side of the screen. These panels are transparent when not in use but will become visible (coloured red) when your finger is correctly positioned on the screen.
Tap anywhere on the screen to stop the vehicles. You can also tap the reset button [R] on the left-hand panel, which will stop the vehicles and reset them to their starting positions.
Steering is controlled by either swiping a finger horizontally left and right anywhere on the screen, or by tilting your device left and right. Select the method you prefer by tapping the shortcut button [S], or via the Simulator Settings option of the main menu.
Current settings for speed and steering are shown on coloured indicators located at the edges of the screen. The steering indicator runs along the top of the screen, with the speed indicator running down the right.
A small, inset image showing steering wheel rotation is also displayed as a further guide while the vehicles are moving.
The indicator markers are colour coded as follows:
Direction | Colour |
Left | Green |
Right | Red |
Forward | Blue |
Reverse | Purple |
There are three driving modes to choose from - autopilot, guidance and normal - which are selected by tapping the shortcut button [D], or via the Simulator Settings option of the main menu. The mode currently selected is shown at the bottom-left corner of the screen.
In autopilot mode, steering is controlled by the simulator. Simply set the vehicles moving in reverse and the simulator will demonstrate how to complete the manoeuvre.
A second visual indicator located above the steering indicator shows how much right or left steering is being applied.
In guidance mode, the suggested steering position is shown on the upper indicator and it's up to you to try to match it using the steering control.
In normal mode you need to use your own judgement, although there are guide rails displayed on the ground which show the suggested approach route.
You can also make use of the Trailer Direction Indicators feature, which is selected via a button on the main screen.
These are coloured lines displayed on either side of the trailer that show the predicted direction of travel of the trailer for any given steering position.
Simply adjust your steering so that the indicators point in the direction you wish to go.
The bird's-eye view gives a simple view from above which clearly shows the wheel positions and angles of both vehicles. Other views, including Observer and Mirror views are available only in the 3D version of the app.
All vehicle and scene models are stored in an online library. Whenever a model is added or updated, the latest version is automatically downloaded to your device next time the app starts.
Different combinations of towing vehicles and trailers can be selected via the Simulator Settings option of the main menu. Scenes and manoeuvres are selected in the same way.
A list of the currently selected options is displayed when Simulator Settings is selected.
Here is a summary of which gestures are recognised and what they do:
Gesture | Description |
Swipe left / Tilt left | Steer left |
Swipe right / Tilt right | Steer right |
Swipe up | Forward speed |
Swipe down | Reverse speed |
Tap | Stop |
And here is a summary of what the buttons do:
Button | Description |
D | Switch between Autopilot, Guidance and Normal driving modes |
S | Switch between Screen Swipe and Tilt steering modes |
R | Reset |
In this mode, left/right steering and forward speed controls are disabled - only reverse speed may be selected.
Returning the vehicles to the start of the manoeuvre can be done at any time using the [R] button However, if you want to drive the vehicles forward to a different starting position you must first select normal (or guidance) mode.
Suggested steering positions shown in the visual indicator may fluctuate slightly, due to the fact they are being calculated in real-time, so don't be tempted to try to match them too precisely!
Select a low reverse speed when manoeuvring. It's much easier to spot when steering changes are required and to make them before things begin to go wrong.
Although no steering instructions are given here, guide rails drawn on the ground can be followed to help achieve a suitable approach route. Try to keep the trailer wheels within these rails as you complete the manoeuvre.
If you want more of a challenge, try selecting difficulty level 2 which will hide the guide rails. This will also change the operation of the [R] button (see below).
When the [R] button is tapped, the vehicles are moved to a pre-determined position in the scene. This position depends upon the difficulty level setting as follows:
Level 1: At the start of the currently selected approach route.
Reversing can begin immediately. If you have selected one of the mirror views, the most appropriate initial view will be selected for you when you tap the [R] button. To avoid confusion, a clear visual indication is given showing which mirror view has been selected.
Level 2: A location away from the start of the selected route.
From here you must first align the vehicles yourself before beginning the reversing manoeuvre. It may be easier to select the Bird's-eye view to see your location more clearly when driving to a particular starting position.
An amber warning bar will appear at the bottom of the screen if you reach a point in the manouevre where a jack-knife condition is approaching. At this point, the jack-knife will be impossible to avoid if you continue to reverse, regardless of steering adjustments.
To recover, you must must first drive forwards to straighten the coupling before resuming the reversing manoeuvre.
A red warning bar indicates that the jack-knife condition has been reached.
